The Ascent is set within the arcology owned by a corporation known as the Ascent Group, and you’re one of its many indents. Behemoth, towering structures known as arcologies are the only places on this planet where any life is possible, and each arcology is owned by a megacorporation- and that ownership extends to vast scores of the hundreds of thousands who reside within these arcologies. The Ascent is set on the planet Veles, where corporations rule the roost. Hell, even in name- you and scores of others in this world are referred to as indents, or indentured labourers. You play as a nameless corporate worker- pretty much a slave, in all but name. It’s not often that you play a game that exhibits such a thorough understanding of its guiding principles, and mastery over the mechanics that are needed to bolster them, but The Ascent is, without the shadow of a doubt, one such game. The cyberpunk aesthetic, tense shooting, and role playing- those are the three pillars that The Ascent is built on, and it goes out of its way to strengthen those pillars in everything that it does from top to bottom. As fundamental as those things might seem for any game, there’s a bevy of examples of even some of the biggest releases that widely miss the mark in at least one of those two areas, if not both.

Having enough uCreds won’t hurt you, so you might want to spend them if you’re looking to finish up a side quest with a cab. While Veles is gorgeous to look at, walking from one objective to another can become a dull activity to dedicate to. But when you fast travel in The Ascent, you’ll appreciate all the time you have saved for yourself. You can always outrun them, with some dodging and juking, and they’ll potentially retreat unless you blow them to smithereens. The foes will respawn, but the chests will remain dormant if you’ve already opened them. They’re literally collecting dust in your inventory, and that is easy money for you if you seek to fast travel a lot on Veles.īe mindful of where you go, though, through a cab or the Metro. Sell them at the merchants at Cluster 13. With the amount of loot you scoop up from fallen foes and opened chests, you’re probably loaded with duplicates. As mentioned beforehand, it’s a lot more direct than the Metro stops. No matter how far you wish to go, the trip will cost 1,000 uCreds if you hail for a cab. But going through the main missions will unlock the previously visited arcologies that won’t require a lot of backtracking. The side missions are a different work of labor since they require higher levels for completion – for most of them, at least, depending on your progression. It’s highly recommended to play through some main missions that’ll naturally unlock the areas for you. Obviously, this makes sense since The Ascent features RPG elements, but the Metro is only convenient if you’ve been to a spot before. The only downside to using fast travel is that you need to visit the locations before you have access to quickly returning to them. Keep in mind, though, that fast travel will only be accessible once you progress through the “Trading Places” mission. This will save a lot of time for you and any friends in your session. So, if you have enough money in your pocket, you can essentially ride to any location where you’ve previously visited. Oddly enough, each ride seems to cost merely 1,000 uCreds. The cab is more precise in dropping you off at your objective, but it will cost you 1,000 uCreds. Missing the train’s stop will result in it departing, but another will arrive in under a minute. Taking the Metro requires no payment, so you can just hop onto the station and then select your previously discovered location. There are two main ways to fast travel: through the Metro system, or by hailing a flying cab.
